20 Kazakh mobilographers began training at the New York Film Academy

20 finalists of the Republican Mobilography Festival, organized by the Dara Foundation for Presidential Initiatives in partnership with the Office of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will spend a week in the classrooms of the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, Kazinform reports.

In one of the leading American universities for comprehensive training in film production and 3D animation, Kazakhstanis will be told about the technologies of the filming process. Classic filming standards, transferred to the technical capabilities of a smartphone, have been used for several years in so-called “vertical” cinema.

The training program is serious, several disciplines are taught in parallel. One of the youngest participants in the project, Myrzabek Kuatbay, he is only 18 years old, shared his emotions after the first day of school.

— Several miles of journey begin with small steps. We have taken the first step, and I am sure that I will succeed! – so briefly, figuratively, but emotionally, as required by the standards of short stories today, Myrzabek described his impressions of his studies.

Within the walls of the New York Film Academy, a top US university, future directors, actors, screenwriters, producers, cameramen, photographers and video game designers are trained. The university was founded by Hollywood producer Jerry Sherlock. Its main principle is formulated as follows: “Teaching cinematography through practice.”

Saparbek Zhaksylyk says that the course began with learning the basics of directing, technical characteristics of hand-held cameras, stages of filming and editing.

— NYFA is the fourth official university where I study. I am pleased with the quality of education and the desire of teachers to teach with inspiration. Getting to know and work with high-level film technologies really increases interest in the profession. I thank the Dara Foundation for this opportunity, because studying at NYFA seemed like a difficult dream for me,” shares Saparbek Zhaksylyk.

The project ambassador, Askhat Shynaliev, recalling the start of the festival, the submission of applications and the selection of the lucky twenty, says that he did not expect such an increased interest from the participants and the high level of the winners’ work. Video applications were sent by more than 7 thousand mobilographers from 16 to 40 years old. Geography - almost all of Kazakhstan. 100 works reached the final stage of the project. 40 finalists received cash prizes, 40 participants completed an online mobilography course, and 20 authors of the best works received the opportunity to study at the New York Film Academy. This is the final, final stage of the project.

- Today is our second day. Editing day - editing lesson. During the lesson we get a lot of information, it turns out that we shoot many things incorrectly, and here it is fully shown how to actually shoot a movie, how to edit it. I am grateful to the Dara Foundation for this opportunity to participate in a project that has not existed in any other country, I would like there to be many such projects, and our finalists, after completing the project, would be able to influence the development of the creative industry in Kazakhstan, share knowledge, help to bring mobilography into a separate industry and influence others,” says Askhat Shynaliev.

The head of the Dara Foundation for Presidential Initiatives, Asel Shildebaeva, believes that the project has fulfilled its mission. The Republican competition of mobilographers solved three problems: popularizing creative professions, supporting talents and providing opportunities for self-realization.

- The Head of State spoke about the importance of developing the creative industry and supporting talented youth, and mobilography fits harmoniously into this trend. We see that the capabilities of smartphones have already been appreciated by such eminent directors as Zack Snyder and Steven Soderbergh, our Timur Bekmambetov. Films shot on a mobile phone are already receiving awards at prestigious film festivals. I am sure that many gifted, young Kazakhstanis can realize themselves in this area,” noted the head of the Foundation, Asel Shildebaeva.

Mobilography is already being called “the new oil.” The content sector is developing rapidly and will only gain momentum. The finalists of the Dara Foundation project will be the first to bring world professional mobilography standards to Kazakhstan. They will also begin the formation of a professional community of Kazakhstani mobilographers.
