The new academic year in Kazakhstan began on Tuesday with the majority of schoolchildren and university students studying remotely, while grade 1-4 pupils are going to primary schools for offline classes.
The Ministry of Education and Science said pupils and teachers should observe strict sanitary measures at schools, with each class accommodating no more than 15 students.
Also on Tuesday, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the government to develop a procedure for returning to full-time education in schools and universities.
"The pandemic has a negative impact on the beginning of the school year. But this is a temporary phenomenon. The government has been instructed to develop a procedure for returning to full-time education in compliance with sanitary standards in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19 among children and young people," Tokayev tweeted.
The president also congratulated schoolchildren and students on the Day of Knowledge, which falls on Sept. 1.
A total of 3.3 million schoolchildren will attend school in Kazakhstan this year, among whom 2.6 million will take online courses. Over 466,000 and 600,000 students will attend colleges and universities, respectively. Enditem
